Alec Baldwin Reveals He Considered Suicide After ‘Rust’ Tragedy
Alec Baldwin, the veteran actor known for 30 Rock, The Hunt for Red October, and numerous film roles, is reportedly dealing with ongoing emotional and physical health challenges related to the 2021 Rust movie set shooting. In March 2025, his wife, Hilaria Baldwin, shared that Alec has been suffering from severe survivor’s guilt and has faced multiple hospitalizations for heart issues and fainting episodes.
According to Hilaria, Alec’s mental health sharply declined in the months following the fatal accident in which cinematographer Halyna Hutchins was shot and killed during filming. Though the incident was ruled accidental, Baldwin has carried deep emotional weight. In her statement, she said, “There were times he questioned if he wanted to go on. He considered suicide. He felt responsible, even when the law said otherwise.”

Hilaria also revealed that Baldwin has been hospitalized several times since 2022 due to stress-related fainting and cardiac complications. Doctors have linked these episodes to psychological trauma, chronic anxiety, and elevated blood pressure. Some hospital stays required overnight monitoring, while others led to longer periods of rest and observation.
The Rust tragedy occurred in October 2021 when a live round was discharged from a prop gun handled by Baldwin. The shot struck Hutchins and injured director Joel Souza. Legal investigations and lawsuits followed. While Baldwin has maintained that he did not pull the trigger, the ongoing public scrutiny and litigation took a serious toll on his well-being.
Despite multiple legal challenges and media pressure, Baldwin returned to limited acting work in 2024. However, his family says the emotional impact has remained constant. “He tries to stay strong for the kids,” Hilaria said. “But he still wakes up at night with flashbacks. It’s a trauma that doesn’t go away.”
Baldwin, now 67, has been in therapy and under medical supervision. His family is focused on creating a stable and quiet environment. Hilaria noted that their seven children have been a major source of hope for him. “They keep him grounded. They give him purpose. But this has been the hardest chapter of his life.”
Colleagues in Hollywood have expressed support for Baldwin, acknowledging the complexity of the situation and his visible pain. Some, like Tina Fey and Martin Sheen, have spoken out about the need for mental health care and compassion in the aftermath of workplace tragedies.
Though he has not commented publicly on his most recent hospitalizations, Baldwin has occasionally shared brief messages online, thanking fans for their kindness. His legal team has also confirmed that he continues to cooperate with remaining investigations related to the Rust case.

As Alec Baldwin continues his recovery, his family has asked for privacy and understanding. Hilaria emphasized that healing from emotional trauma is not quick or simple. “He’s doing his best. Some days are better than others.”
Alec Baldwin remains under ongoing care as he works to manage the mental and physical effects of an experience that changed his life forever.
