Eric Dane Diagnosed With ALS
Eric Dane, the actor known for his roles in Euphoria, Grey’s Anatomy, and The Last Ship, announced in April 2025 that he has been diagnosed with ALS (amyotrophic lateral sclerosis). The diagnosis came in late March or early April, and by June he had already lost function in his right arm. At age 52, Dane shared the news with emotion and clarity, hoping to raise awareness and offer support to others facing the same disease.
ALS, also known as Lou Gehrig’s disease, is a progressive neurological condition that affects nerve cells in the brain and spinal cord. It leads to muscle weakness, loss of mobility, and difficulty speaking, swallowing, and eventually breathing. There is currently no cure.

Dane made his diagnosis public in a heartfelt statement posted on social media and later confirmed in a televised interview. He explained that symptoms began subtly, with weakness in his arm and shoulder. As the condition progressed, further tests confirmed ALS.
“By the time we knew for sure, I had already started losing strength in my right arm,” Dane said. “It’s been fast. It’s been hard. But I want people to know what this looks like, and that they’re not alone if they’re going through it too.”
The actor appeared visibly emotional during his interview but remained composed. He spoke openly about the fear and uncertainty that followed the diagnosis, as well as the overwhelming support from his family, friends, and fans. He emphasized the importance of early detection, compassionate care, and the need for increased funding for ALS research.
Dane’s career spans decades, with his breakout role coming as Dr. Mark “McSteamy” Sloan on Grey’s Anatomy. He later took on a darker, more complex role as Cal Jacobs in HBO’s Euphoria, earning praise for his performance as a conflicted father with a secret past. He also starred in the TNT action drama The Last Ship, where he played a naval officer fighting to save humanity after a global pandemic.
Colleagues from all three series, including Ellen Pompeo, Zendaya, and cast members of The Last Ship, posted messages of love and encouragement following his announcement. Many described Dane as strong, generous, and deeply committed to his craft.

Dane continues to undergo treatment and physical therapy. He has said that while some daily tasks are becoming harder, he remains mentally strong and grateful for every day. “This isn’t how I planned the next chapter of my life,” he wrote, “but I still have more to say, more to share, and more to live for.”
His decision to speak publicly about ALS has brought attention to a disease that often receives limited visibility. Advocacy groups have praised Dane for his courage and honesty.
Eric Dane is supported by his children, close family, and a large community of fans who continue to rally behind him. His openness has already helped others facing similar battles feel seen and understood.
