Steven Van Zandt Rushed to Hospital in Spain for Emergency Surgery
Musician and actor Steven Van Zandt, known for his roles in The Sopranos and his work with Bruce Springsteen’s E Street Band, underwent emergency surgery for appendicitis while on tour in Spain in late June 2025. His condition has stabilized, and he is now recovering well. Van Zandt is expected to rejoin the tour for the upcoming Milan performance.
The 73-year-old guitarist began experiencing sudden abdominal pain shortly after a concert in Madrid. He was rushed to a nearby hospital, where doctors diagnosed acute appendicitis. Emergency surgery was performed to remove his appendix.
According to a statement from his management, the operation was successful, and Van Zandt is now resting comfortably. “Steven is in good spirits and recovering well after the procedure,” the team shared. “He is expected to return to the stage in Milan if his recovery continues without complications.”
Appendicitis is a medical emergency that occurs when the appendix becomes inflamed and infected. If not treated quickly, it can lead to a life-threatening rupture. Surgery is typically the best treatment and is often followed by several days of rest and antibiotics.
Van Zandt thanked fans for their messages and support in a brief social media post: “Grateful for the amazing medical team in Spain and all the love from fans. I’ll be back on stage soon—just needed a little tune-up!”

Bruce Springsteen’s team also released a note wishing him a speedy recovery. During the brief break in the tour schedule, the band is adjusting setlists and travel plans to allow Van Zandt the time he needs to heal fully before performing again.
Van Zandt, also known by his stage name “Little Steven,” has been a key member of the E Street Band since the 1970s. He’s also widely known for playing Silvio Dante on The Sopranos and for his solo music and activism. His intense touring schedule, combined with his age, made fans especially concerned about his health, but recent updates have reassured the public.
As of early July 2025, Van Zandt is continuing his recovery with light physical activity and regular medical checks. Doctors say he is responding well to treatment and is on track to resume performing soon.
This incident serves as a reminder of how quickly health issues can arise, even for seasoned performers used to life on the road. Fans and fellow musicians have applauded Van Zandt’s quick response and the efficient care he received in Spain.

Van Zandt’s next scheduled performance with Springsteen is in Milan later this month. While it depends on how his recovery progresses, sources close to the band say there is cautious optimism he will be ready.
“Rock and roll doesn’t stop,” Van Zandt joked in a recent update. “But sometimes, the body needs a pit stop.”
