Eric Dane’s Emotional ALS Confession Leaves Fans in Tears
Actor Eric Dane, best known for his role as Dr. Mark “McSteamy” Sloan on Grey’s Anatomy, publicly confirmed in April 2025 that he has been diagnosed with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS). The 52-year-old first disclosed the condition privately to family and close friends in January but delayed public announcement until he had a clearer understanding of his prognosis and care plan.
ALS, also known as Lou Gehrig’s disease, is a progressive neurological disorder that affects nerve cells in the brain and spinal cord. Over time, it weakens muscles and limits the ability to move, speak, swallow, and eventually breathe.
In a heartfelt statement released in April, Dane said, “This diagnosis has changed my life, but I am not letting it define who I am. I’m taking it one day at a time and staying focused on my health, my family, and what I still can do.”
Dane first noticed symptoms in mid-2024, including weakness in his right arm and occasional slurred speech. He initially attributed it to stress and fatigue but sought medical attention when the symptoms worsened. By late 2024, he began losing the use of his right arm and underwent several neurological tests that confirmed ALS.
Friends and colleagues say he remained quiet about the condition at first to process the news and consult with specialists. His family has been by his side throughout, and Dane credits their support with helping him find emotional strength.

In a January 2025 interview on Good Morning America, recorded before the official confirmation, Dane appeared visibly emotional but determined. “It’s a terrifying disease,” he said. “But I’m still here. I still want to work. I still want to live fully.”
Despite his diagnosis, Dane attended the January 2025 premiere of the sci-fi film Countdown, where he was seen wearing a brace on his right arm. Co-stars praised him for his courage and professionalism. Actor Jensen Ackles, a close friend and Euphoria co-star, called Dane’s presence “a symbol of resilience.”
Dane plans to return for Euphoria Season 3, saying he wants to continue working while he’s physically able. Production staff are adjusting to his needs on set and have voiced full support.
ALS has no known cure, but treatments and supportive therapies can extend life and improve quality of life. Dane is currently participating in a clinical program that includes physical therapy, adaptive devices, and medication to slow progression.

Fans across the world have sent messages of encouragement. Many shared how his characters inspired them and how his openness is helping raise awareness for ALS. The ALS Association also acknowledged Dane for bringing national attention to the disease.
As of July 2025, Eric Dane continues to manage his condition with courage and transparency. “I don’t know what the future holds,” he said. “But I’m grateful for every moment.”
