Harrison Ford Steps Away From Oscars: Here’s What Happened

On February 28, 2025, 82-year-old actor Harrison Ford was diagnosed with shingles, a viral infection that causes painful blisters. The diagnosis came just days before the 97th Academy Awards. As a result, Ford stepped down from his scheduled role as a presenter on March 1, 2025, to rest and recover.

Ford had been announced as one of the presenters a few days earlier — alongside stars such as Gal Gadot, Andrew Garfield, and Samuel L. Jackson. His withdrawal was confirmed by a representative, who stated that although shingles is not life-threatening, medical advice recommended avoiding large public events.

The shingles diagnosis followed Ford’s appearance at the Screen Actors Guild Awards on February 23. He appeared in good spirits then, even playfully interrupting his Shrinking co‑star Jessica Williams during the ceremony. Despite the diagnosis, sources say he is resting and “doing okay” at home.

Shingles is caused by the varicella-zoster virus, which also causes chickenpox. After recovering from chickenpox — often in childhood — the virus can stay dormant and reactivate later in life. Symptoms include a painful rash, often in a stripe pattern, plus fatigue and sensitivity to touch.

This medical setback comes not long after Ford dealt with another significant event. In January, wildfires threatened his Pacific Palisades residence, forcing an evacuation. Thankfully, his home was spared.

Ford has not shown signs of slowing down professionally. He recently finished filming Season 2 of 1923 and made comments about staying active and not planning to retire. His management team emphasizes that this absence is temporary and he plans to resume public events when he fully recovers.

Medical experts say shingles recovery typically takes two to four weeks, aided by antiviral medication, pain management, and rest. Complications such as postherpetic neuralgia are rare but can occur, especially in older adults. Ford’s doctors expect a smooth recovery, given his early treatment and overall health status.

Fans and colleagues showed immediate support on social media. Many expressed relief that his condition was being managed and wished him a swift recovery. The Academy continued with the Oscars ceremony, replacing Ford with other presenters.

Though Ford missed the Oscars, he continues to appear in public when healthy. His team confirms that he is focused on rest right now and looks forward to rejoining the spotlight soon.
