Jeff Baena, Acclaimed Writer-Director, Dies by Suicide at 47
Writer-director Jeff Baena, 47, died by suicide on January 3, 2025. Authorities confirmed the cause as hanging, at his Los Angeles home.
Baena’s body was found by a dog walker around 10:25 a.m. That person entered his home and discovered him unresponsive. There was no note. Toxicology reports showed no alcohol or drug use .
Baena and actress Aubrey Plaza married quietly in May 2021. They separated in September 2024. Despite the separation, he texted Plaza the morning he died. They spoke by phone the night before.
Plaza said Baena had made “concerning remarks” in October, prompting her to arrange a welfare check. That visit led him to start therapy.
Baena earned credits for I Heart Huckabees, Life After Beth, Horse Girl and Cinema Toast. He and Plaza worked together creatively since 2011.
Plaza and Baena’s family released a joint statement: “This is an unimaginable tragedy. We are deeply grateful to everyone who has offered support. Please respect our privacy during this time”.

Plaza missed her scheduled hosting slot at the Golden Globes, and the ceremony featured a tribute acknowledging her loss.
Baena’s death was included in broader “celebrity deaths of 2025” lists, noting his work and marriage to Plaza.
