Jeff Bridges Speaks Candidly About Life After Cancer
Jeff Bridges, the acclaimed actor known for Tron, The Big Lebowski, and The Old Man, recently opened up about his health one year after entering remission from lymphoma. Now 74, Bridges shared that while he feels “very good,” he continues to deal with two lingering symptoms—memory problems and a loss of smell.
Bridges was diagnosed with lymphoma in 2020 and began chemotherapy that same year. In 2021, he also battled a severe case of COVID-19 while undergoing cancer treatment. He reached remission in 2024 and has gradually returned to acting and public life.
In a recent interview, Bridges reflected on how far he has come and how grateful he feels to be alive and active again. “I’m doing well overall,” he said. “But I still have a few things I’m working through.”
Among those lingering effects, Bridges listed short-term memory issues and the loss of his sense of smell. “I forget things more often than I used to,” he admitted. “And my sense of smell never fully came back after everything.”
Doctors say these types of symptoms are not unusual in patients who’ve gone through chemotherapy or severe illness. Chemotherapy can affect brain function, sometimes leading to what’s commonly known as “chemo brain”—a condition that causes forgetfulness, trouble concentrating, and slower mental processing. COVID-19, especially in older adults, has also been linked to similar cognitive issues and sensory loss, including smell.
Bridges said he does not dwell on the changes but acknowledges them as part of his journey. “Whether it’s the cancer, COVID, or just aging, I don’t know,” he said. “But I’m still here, and I’m grateful.”
Despite the setbacks, Bridges has resumed acting. He stars in the FX series The Old Man, where he plays a former CIA operative on the run. The show was widely praised for his performance, and he has credited the role with helping him regain his focus and stamina. “It gave me something to work toward,” he said. “That made all the difference.”

Bridges also emphasized the importance of staying active—mentally and physically. He continues to practice guitar, read, and stay connected with his family. He credits his wife, Susan Geston, with helping him maintain his strength during and after treatment.
Fans have responded warmly to his health update. Many took to social media to express support, share personal stories, and thank him for his honesty. Bridges has become a symbol of resilience for people facing illness, aging, and recovery.

As of July 2025, Jeff Bridges remains in remission and continues to undergo routine checkups. He encourages others to stay vigilant about their health and to appreciate each day.
“I don’t take anything for granted anymore,” he said. “Life feels sweeter now.”
